education & Experience
I obtained a doctorate in Clinical Child Psychology at Pace University and I am licensed by the state of New York, USA. I hold a Masters in Social Work with a concentration in International Social Welfare and an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Spanish, with a minor in Art History. My mental health service experience includes working in a variety of medical, clinical and academic settings in the New York City area and in my home country of Trinidad. While overseas, I worked on some short-term, psycho-educational projects in Perú, Kenya and the Palestinian Territories, and completed doctoral-level rotations and trainings, in the areas of neuropsychology and trauma. I am fluent in Spanish and worked extensively with Spanish-speaking clients in New York and to a lesser extent now, primarily with refugees in Trinidad.
My areas of interest and experience include complex trauma, grief/loss, international social welfare, work with refugees/displaced persons and the use of yoga, somatic (bodily) and mindfulness techniques in psychological practice. Given my personal and professional background, I am passionate about the consideration of multilayered identities, our sense of belonging, intergenerational trauma and the impact of living in a postcolonial society on psychological development and functioning.
In addition to my private practice, I serve part-time as a supervising psychologist to graduate students and early career psychologists and as a consulting psychologist with Elders and Associates and the Franciscan Institute Trauma Team (FITT). In previous years, I served as a consulting psychologist at the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society (TTCS), UNICEF/Living Water Community and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV). I also worked as a clinical supervisor and part-time faculty member at the University of the West Indies, in the graduate program of clinical psychology.
