education & Experience
I obtained a doctorate in Clinical Child Psychology at Pace University and I am licensed in the state of New York, USA. I hold a Masters in Social Work with a concentration in International Social Welfare and an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Spanish, with a minor in Art History. My mental health service experience includes working in a variety of medical, clinical and academic settings in the New York City area and in my home country of Trinidad. While overseas, I worked on some short-term, psycho-educational projects in Perú, Kenya and the Palestinian Territories, and completed doctoral-level rotations and trainings, in the areas of neuropsychology and trauma. I am fluent in Spanish and worked extensively with Spanish-speaking clients in New York and to a lesser extent now, primarily with refugees in Trinidad.
In addition to my private practice, I serve part-time as a supervising psychologist to graduate students and early career psychologists and as a consulting psychologist with Elders and Associates and the Franciscan Institute Trauma Team (FITT). In previous years, I served as a consulting psychologist at the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society (TTCS), UNICEF/Living Water Community and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV). I also worked as a clinical supervisor and part-time faculty member at the University of the West Indies, in the graduate program of clinical psychology.
fOCUS AND SPECIAL INTERESTS
My areas of interest and experience include complex trauma, grief/loss, international social welfare, work with refugees/displaced persons and the use of yoga, somatic (bodily) and mindfulness techniques in psychological practice. Given my personal and professional background, I am passionate about the consideration of multilayered identities, our sense of belonging, inter generational trauma and the impact of living in a postcolonial society on psychological development and functioning.
